In this episode, Shellee and Sharael discuss:

  • The pressure of getting into outstanding colleges
  • Not knowing where to start in getting into college
  • Having a strong college application resume
  • Supporting your child’s decision

Key Takeaways:

  • Matching their hobbies or activities to what they think an outstanding college is seeking is already a lot of pressure on kids, that is why parents should also take a breath and consider what their child really wants.
  • Work with people who are knowledgeable in getting your child college ready and who have concrete plans that you could follow step by step. Someone they could go to for advice and who gives them a clear and easy plan to navigate the admissions process.
  • Having a strong college application resume can boost your chances of getting accepted into your preferred college or university.
  • Let your child grow on his/her own. You may have doubts and concerns about their preferences but at the end of the day, the choice is still up to them and your respect and support on their decision creates a big impact in their life.

“Just follow your heart. I know it sounds cliche, but you know, doing what you are passionate about…I think as a parent, it really is important also to do what you love, and be an inspiration for your children and showing them that you can be successful, and you can be a great parent.” – Sharael Kolberg
