Sophie’s Success Story
Through College Preparation

Sophie B.

Background:

Sophie was a thoughtful and creative 10th-grade student with an ADHD diagnosis and a 3.4 GPA that sometimes fluctuated depending on workload and structure. She had a strong interest in art and psychology, but she often compared herself to classmates with perfect grades and began to doubt her abilities.

Her parents believed she was capable of succeeding in college but worried about how she would manage independence, academic demands, and time management.

Like many families navigating learning differences, they had no clear understanding of which colleges truly support neurodiverse students or what services might help Sophie thrive.

Without a structured college preparation plan, they feared Sophie might struggle to find a college environment where she could succeed academically and emotionally.

Our Approach:

Through personalized college preparation, we helped Sophie and her family focus on her strengths while building the structure and support she needed to succeed.

First, we helped Sophie understand how ADHD affects learning and how the right strategies, routines, and support systems can make a powerful difference.

Next, we created a plan that focused on:

  • Stabilizing her grades with manageable course rigor
  • Developing stronger academic habits and time-management skills
  • Building confidence through strengths-based coaching

To help Sophie stand out in the college admissions process, we guided her in developing a Passion with Purpose project focused on mental health advocacy through our international non-profit, EmpowerEducation. Sophie taught students how to express their feelings in a safe way as well as creating posters with positive messages to fill their classroom. Through this initiative, Sophie helped raise awareness about student well-being, and the students’ grades went up significantly the following year.

We also identified colleges that would be a strong fit for Sophie’s learning style by focusing on schools with:

  • Robust learning support centers
  • Smaller class sizes and mentoring programs
  • Strong academic programs in psychology and design

At the same time, we guided her parents through the practical aspects of college preparation, including understanding disability services, documentation requirements, and evaluating financial fit for potential schools.

Outcome:

As Sophie gained better academic structure and confidence, her grades stabilized and her outlook toward college improved.

Instead of feeling discouraged by comparisons with classmates, she began to see how her creativity, empathy, and advocacy work made her a unique and valuable college applicant.

Through thoughtful college preparation, Sophie applied to schools known for supporting neurodiverse students and providing strong academic and mentoring environments.
