How Application Coaching
Helped a Student Athlete

Marcus S.

Background:

Marcus was an ambitious 11th-grade student athlete with a 4.3 GPA who excelled in both academics and varsity soccer. He played for his high school team as well as a competitive club program, which had started to attract informal interest from several college coaches.

While the attention was exciting, Marcus and his family felt uncertain about how to move forward. They didn’t know how to evaluate the schools showing interest or how athletic opportunities would align with Marcus’s academic goals.

His parents were especially concerned that Marcus might choose a school only for soccer and end up without the academic support or career opportunities he needed.

They were also confused about how athletic scholarships, academic merit scholarships, and need-based aid work together. Without a clear strategy or professional application coaching, the recruiting process felt overwhelming.

Our Approach:

Through structured application coaching, we helped Marcus and his family evaluate college opportunities using a balanced approach that prioritized both athletics and academics.

First, we clarified Marcus’s long-term academic direction. Through guided planning, he identified strong interest in business and data analytics, which helped shape the type of colleges that would best support his future career goals.

Next, we evaluated schools that had expressed interest in Marcus by looking at four key areas:

  • Academic quality and degree programs
  • Athletic opportunities and team culture
  • Social environment and campus support resources
  • Financial fit for the family

We also helped Marcus communicate strategically with college coaches to ensure that expectations around recruitment, playing time, and scholarship opportunities were realistic.

At the same time, our application coaching process helped the family understand how different types of financial aid could work together, including:

  • Athletic scholarships
  • Academic merit scholarships
  • Need-based financial aid

Finally, we built a balanced college list that included both soccer recruitment opportunities and strong non-athletic options to ensure Marcus had multiple paths forward.

Outcome:

With a clear strategy and strong guidance through the recruiting and application process, Marcus gained several strong college options.

Instead of feeling pressured to accept the first athletic opportunity available, Marcus and his family were able to carefully compare schools based on academics, athletics, and financial value.

This approach allowed Marcus to find a college where he could continue playing soccer while also pursuing a rigorous academic program aligned with his long-term goals.

Marcus ultimately chose a school where he could compete on the soccer team, major in business and data analytics, and receive a combination of athletic and academic scholarships.

The combined aid package made the cost of attendance competitive with in-state tuition, giving Marcus the opportunity to pursue both athletics and academics without creating unnecessary financial strain for his family.

Through thoughtful planning and personalized application coaching, Marcus and his family felt confident that they had chosen a college that supports both his athletic passion and long-term career success.
